Kobus van der Wath
Founder, Axis Group International & Managing Director, The Beijing Axis

Kobus is the Founder of Axis Group International and Managing Director of The Beijing Axis (www.thebeijingaxis.com).

Kobus has been working in Asia for over 22 years and is based in Beijing. Before founding Axis Group and The Beijing Axis, he was Head of Investment Strategy and Global Market Research for Asia Pacific for Standard Chartered Bank Plc and, prior to that, he was a Senior Strategy Consultant with the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in Asia. In his early career, he was an Emerging Market Investment Strategist in London; a Treasury Economist with Standard Merchant Bank in Johannesburg; and an Economist with the South African Reserve Bank in Pretoria.

He holds an MBA from INSEAD in France, a Master of Business (I.T.) from Curtin in Australia and BCom Honours degrees in Finance/Investments and Economics, respectively from UJ and Unisa in South Africa.

He is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Graduate School of Business’ International Strategy Department, teaching ‘Doing Business in China and Asia’. He is also a Fellow at GIBS (Gordon Institute for Business Science, University of Pretoria) in their Centre for Dynamic Markets.

His work is well published, and he has received numerous invitations to present as a keynote speaker and to lead discussions in over 25 countries. He is regarded as a thought leader on the topic of China cross-border business. Kobus was the first person from Africa to publish a book about ‘Doing Business in China’, which was commissioned by the China Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He also published a book in Mandarin called ‘Invest in South Africa’, which was commissioned by the China Ministry of Commerce.


Cheryl Tang

Cheryl is a Director of The Beijing Axis. She has led the sourcing team since the company's inception and has successfully managed a significant number of projects assisting international companies to procure and invest in China, and in directing Chinese companies who are venturing and sourcing abroad.

Her previous experience includes:

  • Senior Media Planner for J Walter Thomson Advertising Company
  • Co-founder of a Beijing-based skin care boutique specialised in the distribution of European Products

Cheryl holds an MBA in International Business from Birmingham Business School, UK. She also has a BA degree in Marketing Communications from the Communications University of China.

Cheryl is fluent in Mandarin, English and Shanghainese.


Haiwei Huang
Managing Director: Axis Capital Advisory

Haiwei is the Managing Director of Axis Capital Advisory (ACA), a division of The Beijing Axis (TBA). He leads all cross-border origination & transaction advisory. Haiwei has been with the firm for 12 years and advises blue-chip South African, Chinese and international clients across various industry sectors.

Prior to joining TBA, Haiwei worked for Chint, a Shanghai Stock Exchange-listed low voltage product manufacturer, as an International Business Development Manager cultivating clients in Europe and the US. Prior to CHINT, he worked as a Sales Representative at Shanghai Huaqi Telecommunication Company.

Haiwei holds a BA Hons degree in Business Administration from the London South Bank University in the UK. He is fluent in Mandarin, English, as well as Shanghainese.


Rachel Wu
Director: Procurement

Rachel is a Director of The Beijing Axis. She is the Divisional Head for Procurement, responsible for global business development, all client solutions across the division and overall P&L. She has an international team across Asia, Europe and Africa that reports to her in driving the business forward. Her expertise is in international business, complex negotiations, strategic development, and global procurement and supply chain. She has advised numerous Chinese and international clients with their cross-border activities over the past 10 years.

She has been a guest lecturer at the University of Cape Town (UCT) Graduate School of Business on international strategy - and has done public speaking in several countries.

Rachel is from Beijing and has lived and worked in Australia, Singapore and China. She has traveled extensively over the past 15 years and is currently based in Beijing. Before joining The Beijing Axis, she worked in senior roles in management consulting, supply chain and logistics. She holds an MBA from the University of Western Australia in Perth and an Honours degree in Economics from the Capital University of Economics and Business in Beijing. She is fluent in Mandarin and English.


Barbie H. Co
Director: Sales Activation

Barbie is a Director of The Beijing Axis. She is the Divisional Head for Sales Activation and Co-Head for Strategy, responsible for global business development, client solutions, and managing an international team across Asia and Africa. With more than a decade of China/Asia experience, she has managed and executed numerous strategy and sales activation projects for both Chinese and multinational clients in various sectors. Her expertise is in international business, project management, research and analysis, marketing and communications, and client engagement.

Prior to joining The Beijing Axis, Barbie was an International Liaison Officer with ET Group, a multinational management consulting corporation specialising in finance and investment, science and technology, and capacity building. Prior to that, she was a Project Assistant with TravelPeople, a member of the Magsaysay Group of Companies, a leading human resource company in the Asia Pacific region. She was also a Lecturer at the Ateneo de Manila University on research methods for international relations, and an independent events and marketing consultant.

Barbie holds a BA degree (magna cum laude) in European Studies, International Relations, from the Ateneo de Manila University (Philippines), and has attended programmes at Beijing Normal University (China) for Chinese Language and Culture, and at L'École Supérieure des Sciences Commerciales d'Angers (France) for International Business. She is fluent in English, Mandarin and Filipino, and speaks basic French and Minnan.
