Hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government, this expo was a major international event set to promote the Chinese market as one looking to increase their imports from the world and increase domestic consumption.

The CIIE had over 3,600 exhibitors showcasing products from 172 countries to more than 400,000 buyers – including representatives from nearly all of China’s state-owned enterprises. The Beijing Axis’ Founder and Group Managing Director Mr Kobus van der Wath, Managing Director of Axis Capital Advisory (ACA) Mr Haiwei Huang, Director of Sales Activation Ms Barbie Co, and Vice President of ACA Mr Elvis Qu were also in attendance at this milestone event.

Partnering with the World Trade Organization, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the inaugural event aimed to promote confidence in the Chinese economy and showcase China as a preferred destination for global exports.

Chinese President Xi Jinping opened the expo with a keynote speech, in which he promised that China would lower tariffs on imports, broaden access to the open market, and increase the amount of imports into the country in the next 15 years. President Xi further added that, within the next 15 years, China’s imports of goods shall exceed USD 30 trillion and China’s imports of services will exceed USD 10 trillion.

China Daily reported that USD 57.83 billion worth of deals were signed during the conference. The largest chunk of these deals was accounted for by the intelligence and high-end equipment sector at USD 16.46 billion with the agricultural products and automobile sectors closely following suit at USD 12.68 billion and USD 11.99 billion respectively.
